The Feast

Within a palatial bedroom, in a four-poster bed, Emma slept like a very tired person as Jellybean came stomping in.

“Why aren’t you conscious?” asked Jellybean as he tried shaking Emma awake.

Emma yawned herself wide-awake, stretching her arms.

“Jellybean, what are you doing? I’m so exhausted after eating so many steak and kidney pies,” said Emma.

“At half two it’s imperative you give your speech.”

“Half two?”

“Yes, half past two.”

“At two-thirty?”

Emma checked her sparkling new, pink diamond watch given to her by King Buttercup. Since becoming a princess, they kept lavishing her with gifts, which she didn’t mind at all except she wasn’t a huge fan of the colour pink.

“It’s half past one now. You mean I have to give the speech in one hour?”

“Yes, it’s imperative,” Jellybean said.

“Why is it imperative?”

“Because the King expects it. You don’t sound too eager. Come, rise up and get ready”.

“How long does the speech have to be?”

“Until ten to.”

“Ten to what?”

“Ten to three. You know, two-fifty.”

“A twenty-minute speech!”

Emma almost fainted. Luckily she was still in bed and her pillows were dead comfy.

“Twenty minutes is nothing. Once, I had to give a speech that lasted for twenty-four days. During it, six dragons lost the will to live,” said Jellybean.

“I think I will lose the will to live.”

“Come on, Princess Emma...”

“Stop calling me that. I am not a princess. However, I am a guitarist.”

“Okay, Emma the Guitarist, rise and shine and join us for the great feast.”

“Mm, I can already smell the wonderful aroma. I am absolutely famished,” Emma said licking her lips and breathing in the aroma that was finding its way into her bedroom.

“Famished? Wow, you must be really hungry. I myself could eat a whole roast knight all to myself.”

“A what?”

“Nothing. Come on, let’s go and have ourselves a gigantic feast.”

Half an hour later, in a luxurious banquet hall, a number of dignified dragons were seated at a grand dining table. At the head of the dining table sat King Buttercup. Next to him was his Queen, who wore numerous sparkly jewels – and bright red lipstick. Emma sat on a very tall highchair next to the King, Queen and Jellybean. Also in attendance were Cyril and other dignitaries - all dragons, of course.

The table was covered with food like roast chicken, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, roast turkey, roast liquorice and, the centrepiece, a roast knight. Jellybean tapped his glass and stood up.

“If I may have every dragon’s attention. May I present to you Princess...”

Emma kicked Jellybean.

“Ow! I am sorry, I mean Emma the Guitarist.”

The dragons blew their approval by blowing hot, fiery air up towards the ceiling. Luckily, it was an exceedingly high ceiling that was well ventilated.

“Thank you, Jellybean. Before I start, I just wish to say that the food looks delicious. I can’t wait to eat as I am absolutely starving. However, first and foremost, I wish to renounce my title of Princess...”

“Renounce?” asked Jellybean.

“Yes, I shall give up the title of Princess Emma. I no longer wish to be called Princess Emma.
